The scenery is spectacular, ample opportunities for coastal walks in quite rugged landscape, where you will meet very few people. Good seafood restaurants, pubs. If you go to Stranraer, a few miles north, you can book ferries to places in Northern Ireland, like Belfast and the Giant's Causeway for a wonderful day out, or if you go further, to Ardrossan, you can take a day trip to the Isle of Arran which is really beautiful. South of Portpatrick, a few miles on the coastal footpath is Knockinaam Bay, with a very swish hotel and private beach. I recommend a cream tea on the hotel lawn - divine stuff! Stranraer itself reminds me of a time travel trip back to the early 1960s: lovely little cafes and food shops with local produce, the beautiful Loch Ryan and a lovely children's park. It's the perfect place if you love the sea, coastal walks and eating excellent food. Also not to be missed is a walk through the Dunskey Glens and Dunskey Gardens, a visit to the Port Logan Botanic
